Capitol Hill Update: Obama Dissing 1,700 Minority and Poor Children in D.C.

So much for freedom of choice in America.  The president of the party which is rabidly pro-choice on abortion is not pro-choice when it comes to freedom of choice in education for some 1,700 black, poor and other minority children in Washington D.C. who could be eligible for the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program.

The program begun by President George W. Bush's administration in 2004 allowed up to 1,700 children to receive up to $7,500 to attend a non-public school just as Barack Obama's children attend a private school in Washington D.C.  According to Wednesday's "The Washington Times," only children whose families have an annual income at or below 185% of the federal poverty guidelines may qualify for the vouchers.

The Democrats do not care what their most loyal supporters  --  black Americans, 95% of whom voted for Obama last year  --  think about their abolishing the scholarship program because their most militant left-wing fringe group, i.e. the teachers' unions have demanded that the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program be eliminated.

This is what one of the parents of a little girl who was about to enter kindergarten at her little brother's school in Washington D.C.  --  but who was denied a scholarship by Barack Obama's and Nancy Pelosi's Democrats  --  said to Obama and Pelosi and their fellow Democrats:  "Please hear my plea about the severity of this matter to me and a lot of parents who are going through the same stress and anxiety of not knowing what is going to happen to our children's hopes and dreams for a better future and education."

Latasha Bennett continued:  "This program shows that low-income children can excel when given the opportunity.  It gives parents such as myself hope for our future.  My children's future depends on this opportunity."  She added that she was "devastated and angry."

A Braun Research, Inc. poll revealed that an incredible 79% of D.C. parents  --  in a city which is overwhelmingly Democrat  --  with school-age children oppose the Democrats' abolishing the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program, and 75% have a favorable view of it.

But just as the Democrats are ignoring the overwhelming majority of Americans (80% plus) who like their health insurance programs and just as the Democrats are ignoring the 72% of Americans who want the rest of the unspent stimulus money returned to them (over a half-trillion dollars,) the Democrats are ignoring the wishes of their most reliable voters in Washington D.C.  If school choice is good enough for the Obamas, it should also be available to their fellow Americans.
