Obama and Pelosi quickly losing their Blue Dog Democrats

In the 1800's, voters in the South who only voted for Democrats were called Yellow Dog Democrats.  They hated the Republicans because the Republican president, Abraham Lincoln and his Union troops, won the Civil War and these Southerners would rather vote for a yellow dog before they would vote for a Republican.  Hence, the term Yellow Dog Democrats.

For the past couple of decades, a new term came up to describe certain Democrats who, in general, were fiscal conservatives. And that term is "Blue Dog Democrats," a term which came from "Yellow Dog Democrats."  They were previously known in the Congress as the "Boll Weevils."  They were among President Ronald Reagan's best friends as he passed his historic tax cuts, budget-cutting programs, and defense build-up which won the Cold War.

There are 52 "Blue Dog" Democrats in the United States House of Representatives.  About 40 of them are from congressional districts which were won by President George W. Bush twice and by Senator John McCain last year.  Even so, the Blue Dog Democrats for the past several months have marched lock-step with their left-wing Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi and their equally liberal president.  However, cracks are beginning to show in the Obama/Pelosi united front in Congress.

Indeed, on the recent energy bill, Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi lost 44 Democrats and they won by 2 votes.  Yesterday afternoon, the "Rule" for the Financial Services Appropriations bill --  which determines which amendments get to be voted on during the consideration of any bill and which will allow taxpayers to pay for abortions in District of Columbia and will allow the so-called "Fairness Doctrine" to be returned to the airwaves getting rid of almost all of the 2,000 mostly local/regional conservative talk show hosts  --  lost 39 Democrats.

The Democrat leadership really lost 43 Democrats on that vote on the "Rule," and indeed Nancy Pelosi was losing the vote by 8 votes when time expired on the "Rule," but she and her henchmen kept the vote open way past the alloted time and were able to twist enough arms to win by one vote.

Then, the Democrat leadership thought better of that, since the Republicans could blame each and every Democrat in campaign advertising for providing THE vote to allow taxpayer-funded abortions in the District of Columbia and to get rid of almost all the radio talk show hosts in America.

So, they persuaded the "Dean of the House"  --  the most senior Democrat who Nancy Pelosi unceremoniously passed over for Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee giving it to her fellow California radical, Henry Waxman  --  to change his vote and Obama and Pelosi "won" the vote by 216-213.   Incidentally, on final passage of the Financial Services Appropriations bill, Obama and Pelosi lost 38 Democrats.

The most scary bill for the Blue Dog Democrats is coming up for a vote soon, possibly before their month-long summer vacation and that is the consideration of Obama's socialized medicine bill.   These Blue Dogs are frightened because some 80% of the American people are fearful about losing their great health care that they have right now, a statistic provided by Sean Hannity on his show last night.  Americans know they have the best health care system in the world and they don't want the Democrats to ruin that.

The Blue Dog Democrats are very aware of the newest polls showing their president dropping like a rock in approval ratings.  Indeed, on Bill O'Reilly's show on Fox News Channel last night, Scott Rasmussen reported that only 51% of Americans approve of Barack Obama with 47% disapproving.

That is an astounding drop in Obama's approval rating.  As a result, these Blue Dogs are very anxious to join the Republicans in supporting market-based solutions for the problems which the American medical system does have.  Stay tuned.
