Pro-Life Movement Gains Victory on House Floor

It has not been all doom and gloom for the pro-life movement since Barack Obama became president. First, Obama overturned President Ronald Reagan's Mexico City policy (maintained by both Presidents Bush) by executive order. The Mexico City policy requires that all non-governmental organizations (NGOs) which receive federal funding must not perform or promote abortion services, as a method of family planning, in other countries.

Then Obama began naming and installing radically pro-abortion supporters into his cabinet, and nominating last month, as his first U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals nominee, a pro-abortion judge. However, on March 18th, the pro-lfe movement won a 318-105 victory on the floor of the House of Representatives.

Republicans in the House offered a parliamentary procedure called a Motion to Recommit (MTR) on a Democrat bill, H.R. 1388, the so-called "The Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education Act." The Republican MTR sets restrictions on what kinds of groups can participate in federal community service programs. If organizations provide abortions or promote abortions, or engage in lobbying activities, or engage in protesting or union organizing, etc., then they will be barred from being involved with the volunteerism program.

Kansas Republican Todd Tiahrt said after the pro-life victory: "This is a legislative victory for the pro-life community. The Republican MTR will ensure that organizations that promote, provide or make referrals for abortions are prohibited from participating in federal community service programs. Individuals enrolled in federally-sponsored programs should not be getting taxpayer assistance to work on behalf of organizations with close ties to the abortion industry. I am pleased this provision passed by a wide margin today."

Congressman Tiahrt also said that the Republican Motion to Commit victory will help ensure future Administrations do not overturn the restrictions and said that the prohibition on organizations with ties to abortion services was a provision added by conservatives that is not currently in federal regulations. People of faith and those supporting the sanctity of life need not be discouraged. Other pro-life victories will follow if we just persevere.
