GOP Whip McCarthy Encourages Americans To Speak Out On A Balanced Budget Amendment

Consistently, by wide margins  --  over 70% of those polled  --  the American people want the United States Congress to pass a balanced budget amendment.  It was so important, that even the big-spenders in the Democrat Party leadership agreed that there must be a vote on a balanced budget amendment as part of the debt ceiling deal agreed to this past summer.

The last time a serious effort was made to get a Balanced Budget Amendment passed was 14 years ago. It failed by one vote in the Senate and the Democrat Party was responsible for its failure on March 3, 1997.  In the previous Congress  --  the 104th Congress  --  the Democrats stopped that effort to pass the Balanced Budget Amendment also.  Although it passed with a huge margin in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, the Democrats in the Senate stopped it from being sent to the States for ratification by only one vote.

The Majority Whip in the United States House of Representatives, Congressman Kevin McCarthy, R-CA, is calling upon Americans to get involved to see that such an amendment actually passes the Congress this time and is sent to the States for ratification.  38 states need to ratify the balanced budget amendment for it to become the 28th Amendment to the United States Constitution.

Majority Whip McCarthy said: “Over the past couple months, House Republicans have spoken out on the need for Congress to pass a balanced budget amendment. We currently face an impending debt crisis, one that imperils our near-term and long-term economic growth and will greatly exacerbate our already unacceptably high unemployment rate. The House has taken action to manage down our debt and Washington excess, but only the binding authority of a balanced budget amendment will ensure that we can walk our country back from this cliff."

McCarthy Encourages Americans To Speak Out On A Balanced Budget Amendment

Washington D.C. – House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (CA-22) released the following statement encouraging Americans across the country to make their voices heard on a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution using America Speaking Out (ASO):

“Over the past couple months, House Republicans have spoken out on the need for Congress to pass a balanced budget amendment. We currently face an impending debt crisis, one that imperils our near-term and long-term economic growth and will greatly exacerbate our already unacceptably high unemployment rate. The House has taken action to manage down our debt and Washington excess, but only the binding authority of a balanced budget amendment will ensure that we can walk our country back from this cliff.

“A balanced budget amendment is the only real preventative measure that will stand in the way of Washington Democrats’ agenda of more deficit spending and more borrowing that will drive us further into debt. In the coming weeks, House Republicans, with the support of a large majority of Americans, will continue our fight to pass this crucial reform. We’re asking Americans from across the country to share their opinions on government spending and our enormous debt.

“Last year, we asked all Americans to share ideas with us through America Speaking Out so that we can work together to put America on a better path. We are asking that Americans join us again through this same platform to make their voices heard on  Washington’s fiscal policies and a balanced budget amendment.”

*Note: www.AmericaSpeakingOut.com is an online initiative launched by House Republicans aimed at giving the American people a voice and the power to set the agenda in Congress. Through ASO, Americans can show their support for a balanced budget amendment, which will be voted on in the House this fall.
