RSC Chairman Jordan: Want to Block-Grant Food Stamps?

RSC Chairman Jim Jordan urges all RSC Members to support the State Nutrition Assistance Flexibility Act (H.R. 6567), which would enact much-needed reform of federal food welfare programs.  This legislation was recently introduced by Reps. Tim Huelskamp, Paul Broun, Steve Chabot, and Jim Jordan.  The legislation combines the six food welfare programs in the Farm Bill into a single block grant to states.

This new block grant replaces the following six food welfare programs:

  • Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
  • The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP)
  • Community Food Projects
  • Commodity Supplemental Food Program
  • Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program
  • Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP)

The legislation, supported by the National Taxpayers Union (NTU) and praised in RedState, rolls the funding back to FY2008 levels and provides that funding as a block grant to states to enact their own nutrition programs as they see fit.  States will have maximum flexibility to implement food welfare programs tailored to the needs of their own populations.  Programs established under this block grant will be subject to strong work requirements for able-bodied adults.  More information regarding this legislation, including text, can be found here
