The national Democratic Party is endorsing same-sex marriage and calling for the repeal of Defense of Marriage of Act, the federal law that defines marriage as between one man and one woman.

At a weekend meeting in Detroit, the party voted for the first time to add the issue to the party's platform. A platform is a statement of the party's priorities on the economy, social issues, and national defense.

"You all know we are the party of 'we,' not the party of 'me,'" Newark Mayor Cory Booker, who co-chairs the platform committee, said Saturday. "We're the party of inclusion, not exclusion."

He added that the move may "repel some and attract others to be more engaged. This campaign is not going to turn on gay marriage. This campaign is going to turn on who has the best ideas for the economy."

The platform will now go to the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., in September to be ratified by delegates.
