Portman and Stabenow to Introduce Resolution Calling for Action to Protect Iraqi Christians

On Wednesday, U.S. Senators Rob Portman (R-Ohio) and Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) introduced a resolution condemning the violence and persecution of Iraqi Christians and other religious minorities by the Islamic State in Iraq. The resolution also urges the President to reaffirm America's commitment to religious liberty by helping to create safe zones for refugees fleeing persecution, ensuring timely processing of visa applications from religious minorities, and working with the Iraqi government to ensure religious minorities are protected.

"The United States must stand up for religious freedom not only at home, but also in regions of the world experiencing turmoil like the Middle East," Portman stated. "This resolution says that we will not tolerate targeted violence against Christians in Iraq and that those persecuting Christians must be stopped."

"We must do everything in our power to combat religious persecution of Christians around the world," said President and CEO of the Christian Coalition of America Roberta Combs. "We applaud the efforts of Senators Portman and Stabenow to highlight this important issue"... (READ MORE)

Republicans Voice Support for the Defense of Israel

U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell made the following remarks on the Senate Floor on Wednesday regarding the funding for Israel’s right to defend themselves:

“Israel’s military campaign against the terrorist organization Hamas has a clear-cut objective: to restore Israel’s security by eliminating rockets, shut down infiltration tunnels from which Hamas is launching its attacks against Israel, and to demilitarize Gaza.

“This is clearly justified in the face of more than 2,300 rocket attacks into Israel from Gaza since early July. And I strongly support Israel’s recent efforts through Operation Protective Edge to defend itself — and to end the threat of additional rocket and infiltration attacks by Hamas... (READ MORE)

Speaker Boehner: More Unilateral Actions Will Cement Legacy of Lawlessness

At his weekly press briefing on Thursday, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) blasted President Obama for not only failing to address the border crisis for which he is responsible, but for threatening more unilateral actions that will make matters worse.  Following are Boehner’s remarks:

“Republicans are committed to addressing the humanitarian crisis on the border in a responsible way.

“The first bill on the floor helps secure our border and speeds the return of unaccompanied children back to their home countries.

“The president and the White House have abandoned all pretense of governing.  They once called… changing the 2008 law a ‘bipartisan priority.’  Now they oppose it and call it ‘partisan’... (READ MORE)

US Representatives Collins and Forbes: Answering a higher calling to serve

“For God and country.” This is the motto of American military chaplains. It is such a simple phrase, but it carries profound implications for what it means to be a chaplain in the U.S. military.

What is the role of a military chaplain? Technically, chaplains exist to enable and support the free exercise of religion for service members and their families. The ability to freely practice and live one’s religious beliefs is a fundamental right that is burdened by military service, thus necessitating chaplains. The full importance of chaplains as religious leaders in the military, though, cannot be encapsulated in a definition. They are an invaluable pillar in the way they serve... (READ MORE)
