White House's Chief Fox News Critic Stepping Down

White House Communications Director Anita Dunn will step down by the end of November and be replaced by her deputy Dan Pfeiffer, Fox News has learned.

Dunn's departure had been expected as she took the position on an interim basis earlier in the year. The White House had long said Dunn would leave before the end of 2009.

But her exit comes at a critical time for the White House, with the administration trying to push the Senate to follow the House of Representatives' lead in passing health care reform.

Dunn, who has been a vocal critic of Fox News and last month accused the network of being a "wing of the Republican Party," will remain as an outside consultant to the White House and continue to be involved in strategy...

Leftist GOP candidate, Scozzafava, quits NY race

ALBANY, N.Y. - Fighting plunging support, Republican Dierdre Scozzafava abruptly suspended her campaign Saturday in a special election for a U.S. House seat that has exposed a rift among national factions of the party.

Campaign spokesman Matt Burns said Scozzafava is essentially withdrawing from the race, although her name will remain on Tuesday's ballot. She thinks stepping aside is best for the party, he said.

"It is increasingly clear that pressure is mounting on many of my supporters to shift their support," Scozzafava said in a written statement. "Consequently, I hereby release those individuals who have endorsed and supported my campaign to transfer their support as they see fit"...

Legal group urges prayers for liberals

Liberty Counsel has launched a new program called "Adopt a Liberal."

The program, according to Liberty Counsel president Mat Staver, is designed to encourage people to pray for those in leadership, to restore poor leaders to right thinking.

"It's really a prayer-in-action program based upon the words of the Apostle Paul to Timothy where he says that we ought to pray for those in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence," the attorney explains. "And that's from I Timothy, Chapter 2."

On the "Adopt a Liberal" list are Republicans, Democrats, Independents -- and those who are not involved in politics but make decisions that affect people's lives...

'Public Plan' Pits Democrat vs. Democrat

Liberal Democrats faced off against party moderates and Republicans Tuesday as members of a key Senate panel sparred over the anatomy of the so-called public option proposed in President Obama's health care reform agenda.

Members of the Senate Finance Committee, including Democratic Sen. Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia and Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., proposed separate amendments on the Senate floor Tuesday in an attempt to outline what the government's public plan should look like...

Limbaugh's August Ratings Soar; Media Ignore the Feat

(CNSNews.com) - Rush Limbaugh, the self-professed man the mainstream media "love to hate," would have created a stir last week – if the media had actually taken notice.

Arbitron’s “Portable People Meter” (PPM) ratings for August were released last week and Limbaugh experienced record ratings in a number of major American radio markets.

According to broadcasting industry analyst Brian Maloney, Limbaugh had “blockbuster success” in some key cities, including Los Angeles -- home to the number one radio station in the country...

Hackers Imperil Wilson Campaign Web Site

Rep. Joe Wilson chose an unconventional venue in which to level an attack on President Obama Wednesday night: a joint session of Congress.

Now Wilson's opponents are counterattacking him in an increasingly popular venue for political mayhem: cyberspace.

Sources close to the South Carolina congressman charge that hackers have blitzed his campaign Web site JoeWilsonforCongress.com with a series of attacks that periodically shut down the page...

Fines proposed for going without health insurance

WASHINGTON – Americans who don't get health insurance once the system is overhauled would be fined up to $3,800 under a proposal that circulated in Congress on Tuesday as Democratic leaders cast doubt on prospects for creating a government-run insurance plan.

President Barack Obama prepared what he hoped would be a game-changing speech to a joint session of Congress on Wednesday, his top domestic priority in the balance.

After a month of contentious forums, Americans were seeking specifics from the president. So were his fellow Democrats, divided on how best to solve the problem of the nation's nearly 50 million uninsured...

Justice Stevens' hiring at high court slows

WASHINGTON – Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens has hired fewer law clerks than usual, generating speculation that the leader of the court's liberals will retire next year.

If Stevens does step down, he would give President Barack Obama his second high court opening in two years. Obama chose Justice Sonia Sotomayor for the court when Justice David Souter announced his retirement in May.

Souter's failure to hire clerks was the first signal that he was contemplating leaving the court...

ABC, NBC Won't Air Ad Critical of Obama's Health Care Plan

The refusal by ABC and NBC to run a national ad critical of President Obama's health care reform plan is raising questions from the group behind the spot -- particularly in light of ABC's health care special aired in prime time last June and hosted at the White House.

The 33-second ad by the League of American Voters, which features a neurosurgeon who warns that a government-run health care system will lead to the rationing of procedures and medicine, began airing two weeks ago on local affiliates of ABC, NBC, FOX and CBS. On a national level, however, ABC and NBC have refused to run the spot in its present form.

"It's a powerful ad," said Bob Adams, executive director of the League of American Voters, a national nonprofit group with 15,000 members who advocate individual liberty and government accountability...
