Net Neutrality Legislation Introduced by Republican Congressman Charles "Chip" Pickering and Democrat Congressman Edward Markey called the "Internet Freedom Preservation Act of 2008", H.R. 5353
Christian Coalition of America commends the bipartisan bill regarding net neutrality named the "Internet Freedom Preservation Act of 2008," H.R. 5353 introduced last week by Democrat Congressman Ed Markey, Massachusetts and Republican Congressman Charles "Chip" Pickering, from Mississippi.
The official purpose of Markey/Pickering bill will "Establish broadband policy and direct the Federal Communications Commission to conduct a proceeding and public broadband summits to assess competition, consumer protection, and consumer choice issues relating to broadband Internet access services, and for other purposes." Americans should be in control of the Internet and not the monopoly cable and phone companies.
The monopolistic phone and cable companies such as Comcast, AT&T, Verizon, and Time Warner have been lobbying to kill Net Neutrality. When Congressman Pickering's and Congressman Markey's bill is passed and signed into law, these companies will be forbidden to discriminate against Web sites such as Christian Coalition of America or indeed any grassroots organizations or services based on their source, ownership or destination. The Markey/Pickering bill will write Net Neutrality protections into the Communications Act to preserve an open and non-discriminatory Internet.
Roberta Combs, president of the Christian Coalition of America said regarding the Markey/Pickering bill: "We believe that Net Neutrality is a family issue. At its core, the Christian Coalition is a grassroots organization that wholly depends on our ability to communicate with our members and chapters across the country. This bill is essential for that. It protects Net Neutrality and ensures that we can build a better America by connecting everyone to an open Internet."
Christian Coalition of America plays an important part in the SavetheInternet.com Coalition. It is an historic grassroots alliance of more than 800 groups from across the political spectrum, small businesses, thousands of bloggers, and millions of everyday people concerned about the future of the Internet. Members range from the liberal MoveOn.org to the conservative Gun Owners of America and include Consumers Union, Consumer Federation of America, Public Knowledge, Media Access Project, the ACLU, the American Library Association and leading Internet scholars such as Professors Lawrence Lessig and Tim Wu.
National Football League (NFL) Announces New Policy Allowing Churches To Show the Super Bowl in their Churches on Same size Screens Used by Sports Bars/Democrat Congressman Heath Shuler, Republican Congressman Joe Pitts, and Republican Senator Orin Hatch Satisfied with the NFL's new Policy
Right before this year's Super Bowl, a number of churches around the United States cancelled their long-time Super Bowl parties because of supposed threats from the National Football League (NFL.) There was a huge uproar from churches complaining that sports bars were able to show the Super Bowl game on large screens, but yet churches were not able to do so for church fellowship events. The United States Congress threatened legislation to solve this problem for churches.
Here is an excerpt from the NFL new policy regarding churches being able to show the Super Bowl in their facilities: "The National Football League this week announced that it will not object to live showings of future Super Bowls by religious organizations when such showings are free and on premises used by the religious organization on a routine and customary basis. The NFL does not believe that legislation is necessary for this purpose and will unilaterally implement this policy beginning with the Super Bowl in 2009."
And in a letter to Senator Orin Hatch, R-UT, former Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, the NFL said: "...The league would not object to 'live showings -- regardless of screen size -- of the Super Bowl' by religious organizations ... as long as the showings are free and are on premises that the church uses on a 'routine and customary' basis."
Representatives Heath Shuler (D-NC) and Joe Pitts (R-PA) yesterday in a press release applauded the National Football League and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s decision to allow religious organizations to show the Super Bowl as a fellowship event.
Congressman Pitts and Shuler reported that: "The NFL announced earlier today that it will no longer object to churches and other religious organizations showing the Super Bowl, so long as no admission fee is charged and the showing occurs at the religious organizations routine and customary location. The NFL has said it will implement this policy unilaterally for the Super Bowl beginning in 2009. With the NFL’s actions, Shuler and Pitts’ legislation will no longer be necessary."
Christian Coalition of America commends Congressmen Heath Shuler (D-NC) and Joseph Pitts (R-PA) and Senator Orin Hatch for their work in defense of churches all across America.

ACTION ITEM: Request your Member of the House of Representatives at 202-225-3121 or you can go to http://www.cc.org/contactcongress.cfm and ask them to co-sponsor H. Res. 888, the "Religious Heritage Resolution" authored by Congressman Randy Forbes.
House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee to Mark-up Next Thursday a Bill Which Undermines the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR)/Radical Groups Such as Planned Parenthood Could Extort from American Taxpayers Even More Billions Than They are Already Receiving
Next Thursday, February 28th, the House Foreign Affairs Committee will vote on the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR)/Global AIDS reauthorization bill, which unless changed, will result in American taxpayer dollars being spent to fund abortion, allowing the abortion industry, such as the infamous Planned Parenthood, to grab even more billions of tax dollars for their deadly business.
Just this past week, President George W. Bush, who initiated PEPFAR and got Congress to pass it, received much praise during his tour of African nations for this highly successful program. And now liberal and pro-abortion Members of Congress are trying to gut the very ideas in President Bush's program which made it so worthy of praise. These left-wingers, including the Democrat leadership in the House of Representatives and in the U.S. Senate are shutting out pro-life and pro-Africa voices and trying to abolish the successful ABC model of promoting abstinence, being faithful, and only when necessary, using condoms.
The new Chairman of the committee, Congressman Howard Berman, D-CA, is about to have his committee vote on the PEPFAR/Global AIDS reauthorization bill which undermines the values which have made the American anti-HIV program so successful. The bill would allow unborn-child killing groups, such as Planned Parenthood, to have access of up to $10 billion MORE per year than they are already extorting out of the U.S. Congress. It is disgraceful that any Member of the United States Congress would even consider voting for this abominable bill, unless the bill is changed to President Bush's original intent.
ACTION ITEM: Contact your Member of the House of Representatives at 202-225-3121 or you can go to http://www.cc.org/contactcongress.cfm and ask them to oppose the PEPFAR/Global AIDS reauthorization bill unless changes are made to stop it from funding abortion.
Christian Coalition of America Joins some 60 Groups in Demanding that the Democrat and Republican Leadership of the U.S. Senate Move President Bush's Judicial Nominations
The Christian Coalition of America joined some 60 grassroots organizations in writing a letter to the Democrat and Republican leadership in the United States Senate demanding that they FINALLY begin to vote on President George W. Bush's judicial nominations, some of whose nominations have been languishing for years in limbo. It is imperative that some 15 United States Court of Appeals nominees get a vote on the Senate floor before this second session of the 110th Congress ends this coming September.
The letter written to the Senate leadership comments on "the remarkably low approval ratings for the 110th Congress†and decries the fact that “a year into the 110th Congress, the Judiciary Committee has held hearings for only four appeals court nominees and has voted on only six of President Bush's appeals court nominees. As a result, the full Senate has fallen far short of the confirmation pace necessary to meet the historical average of 17 circuit court confirmations during a president’s final two years in office [with] opposition control of the Senate.†The last time the Republicans made Democrats' obstruction of judicial nominations and the critical vacancy rate on the federal bench in 2004, the issue swept the Senate Democrat Leader, Tom Daschle, out of office.
The letter which was signed by Christian Coalition of America, makes it clear to Senate Judiciary Committee members that the coalition expects them to, at very least, give the full Senate “an opportunity to confirm fifteen appeals court nominees in the 110th Congress.†That “would match the number of circuit court confirmations in President Clinton’s final two years.†“Anything less and the members of the Judiciary Committee will be remembered for presiding over historic levels of obstruction,†the letter emphasizes.
The letter concludes by asking the Senate Judiciary Committee to “fulfill your responsibility ... by ensuring that each and every judicial nominee is given a hearing and a vote in committee. If you cannot support a particular nominee, vote him or her out of committee without a positive recommendation, or vote against confirmation on the Senate floor.†But do “not stand in the way†of the full Senate “carry[ing] out its constitutional duty of advice and consent by providing each nominee with a timely up-or-down confirmation vote."
Incidentally, the Senate Judiciary Committee finally held a hearing for one of President George W. Bush's outstanding U.S. District Court nominees, Richard Honaker, who established an outstanding pro-life record in the Wyoming legislature. Mr. Honkaker, a man with a reputation of integrity both in and out of the public square, was severely criticized by left-wing Democrat Senator, Diane Feinstein, California, wondering whether he would uphold the "constitutional right to privacy." Others criticized him for his effort to pass a Human Life Protection Act during his time as a legislator.
Planned Parenthood -- the Most Gruesome Industry in America which was Founded by Racist Margaret Sanger -- Continues to Build Gigantic Abortuaries Able to Kill up to 10,000 Unborn Babies in Each Killing Chamber Every Year
LifeNews.com reported this week that Planned Parenthood - the infamous "killing field" founded by racist Margaret Sanger in the early 1900's -- continues "the trend the nation's largest abortion business has started in other cities" with the "Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts ... demolishing its current two-story abortion facility in Worcester..." and replacing it "with a larger 33,000 square-foot three-story abortion center. Up to some 10,000 unborn babies were slaughtered in the Worcester (Massachusetts) Planned Parenthood abortuary last year.
Incredibly, the spokesman for the Worcester killing center, Jackie Mansfield-Marcoux said: "Community demand for our services continues to grow, and building this health center will allow us to meet that demand in a more convenient location (moving it's office from Pleasant Street to near Park Avenue.)"
In Denver, Planned Parenthood is building a 50,000 square foot abortuary and in Houston, the Planned Parenthood is building a gigantic 78,000 square foot killing chamber and one entire floor will be devoted to doing late-term abortions; undoubtedly including illegal partial-birth abortions.
The demand for hard-earned American tax dollars from this abominable group never ceases. The Planned Barenhood of Schenectady (N.Y.) is also building a new unborn child-killing center and indeed using $350,000 in American tax dollars to pay for it. The new 2,452-square-foot abortuary will be funded by the New York State Department of "Health" and Crime Victims Board.
Christian Coalition Activists Need to Encourage 110th Congress to Pass Both "Net Neutrality" and "Multicast/Equal Access" Legislation to Prevent Discrimination Against Religious Broadcasters /Democrat-controlled Congress Expected to Pass "Net Neutrality"
The lame-duck Republican Senate did not pass a telecommunications bill and thus a "Net Neutrality" provision was not passed in the 109th Congress.
"Net Neutrality" is an issue extremely important to America's grassroots organizations and those Americans who want to ensure the cable and phone companies controlling access to the Internet will not discriminate against groups like Christian Coalition of America. Although AT&T recently made an agreement with the FCC that it would agree to "net neutrality" in order to merge with BellSouth Corporation in an $86 billion merger, the agreement only lasts 2 years. Therefore Congress must pass "net neutrality" legislation in order to make "net neutrality" permanent.
It is anticipated that the Democrat-controlled 110th Congress will agree with the position of the recent House Judiciary Committee Chairman, James Sensenbrenner, Republican-WI, and pass a "Net Neutrality" bill during the 110th Congress. If "Net Neutrality" legislation does not pass, consumers will have to pay an additional fee to have a website. The cable/telephone monopoly will be dividing the Internet into a "fast track" and "slow track." Our grassroots, many of whom cannot afford the additional fees, will have to be on the slow track, which will mean that many of our websites will be passed by because the general public will not have the patience to go on the "slow track".
"Multicast/Equal Access" (formerly called "Multicast/Must-carry") will go a long way to preventing discrimination against religious broadcasters. Without a "Multicast/Equal Access" law, the cable and satellite companies would probably not add new Christian channels and the influence of current Christian channels will be diluted.
ACTION ITEM: Please all your Congressman at 202-225-3121 or you can go to http://www.cc.org/contactcongress.cfm and email them and urge them to support "Multicast/Equal Access" and religious broadcasters. They can do so by co-sponsoring the Net Neutrality legislation introduced by Republican Congressman Charles "Chip" Pickering and Democrat Congressman Edward Markey called the "Internet Freedom Preservation Act of 2008," H.R. 5353.
Join the Christian Coalition’s Judicial Task Force, which is dedicated to ending the obstruction of the President's judicial nominees and ensuring that they ALL receive a fair "up or down" vote by the full Senate
Please sign our petition and join the Judicial Task Force at: http://www.cc.org/taskforce.cfm
Encourage your family, friends and church friends to also sign the petition at our website and to join the Christian Coalition’s Judicial Task Force, which is dedicated to ending the obstruction of the President's judicial nominees and ensuring that they ALL receive a fair "up or down" vote by the full Senate.
There are a number of President Bush's Circuit Court of Appeals' nominees who have not yet received a Senate floor vote. The challenge to confirm President Bush's nominees in a Democrat-controlled Senate will be very difficult and we need your help in doing just that. You will become part of a team of individuals who are committed to being ready on a moment’s notice to take action when obstruction occurs.
Please keep the above issues in prayer. Through prayer and action great and mighty things can be accomplished.
