Pro-family and Veterans Groups Gain Victory -- including Christian Coalition of America and the Wounded Warrior Project -- After Demanding that Democrat Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Democrat Leader Harry Reid Pass the Defense Bill Without "Hate Crimes" Amendment Which Would have Given Special Rights to Homosexuals/Senator Ted Kennedy Suffers Crushing Defeat

Yesterday, Capitol Hill newspaper "The Hill" announced that Senator Ted Kennedy's abominable "Hate Crimes" amendment to the defense bill -- needed to support our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan -- was stripped from the bill by the Senate/House conferees after weeks of wrangling. "The Hill" reported that earlier this week, Republican members of the House Armed Services Committee said they would not sign the defense authorization conference report if the so-called "Hate Crimes" provision giving special rights to homosexuals was included.

"The Hill" reported that: "President Bush had threatened to veto the bill if it included the hate-crimes language, and conferees from both sides of the aisle and both chambers had warned that the Senate provision would jeopardize the passage of the entire defense authorization bill, which includes policies designed to help wounded soldiers and increase military pay."

Recently, several veterans groups including the Wounded Warrior Project, the Blinded Veterans Association, the Brain Injury Association, the National Military Family Association, wrote a letter to the Democrat leaders in the House and Senate, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, to stop their political posturing and to pass the defense bill which our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan desperately need Congress to pass without including a frivolous amendment, the so-called "Hate Crimes" amendment which will give special rights to homosexuals. Here are excerpts from the letter:

Dear Madame Speaker and Mr. Leader:

As organizations representing the needs of our wounded service-members and their families, we are very concerned about recent press reports indicating that the final consideration of the Defense Authorization Act for FY2008 has been delayed due to continued debate over the war in Iraq as well as other extraneous provisions not related to the defense of our nation. As you know, in addition to authorizing many of the vital programs of the Department of Defense, the Senate version of this important of legislation contains the Dignified Treatment of Wounded Warriors Act—a document carefully crafted to address the problems highlighted by the situation at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.... Swift passage of this legislation will reassure those serving on active duty that Congress and the American people have heard their concerns and are taking the appropriate actions to ensure that these brave soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines are taken care of i n a manner befitting their sacrifices. Our wounded warriors deserve no less.

Jeremy Chwat - Vice President for Public Affairs - Wounded Warrior Project

Tanna Schmidli - Chairman, Board of Governors - National Military Family Association

Tom Zampieri - Director, Government Relations - Blinded Veterans Association

Susan H. Conners - President, CEO - Brain Injury Association

Christian Coalition of America sent out an Action Alert on Wednesday to its supporters urging them to contact certain members of the House of Representatives and the United States Senate who are on the Senate/House Conference committee who voted for the so-called "Hate Crimes" amendment. Christian Coalition of America commends the leaders in the Senate and the House for gaining this victory for the American people: Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (KY) and Senate Republican Whip Trent Lott (MS,) and House Republican Leader John Boehner (OH) and House Republican Whip Roy Blunt (MO.)

Democrat Senator Robert Byrd and Republican Senator Sam Brownback Introduce Legislation, S. 2417, on Wednesday to Require "In God We Trust" (America's Motto) to Appear on Face of One Dollar Coins

Senators Sam Brownback (R-KS) and Robert Byrd (D-WV) on Wednesday introduced S. 2417, legislation which would require the national motto “In God We Trust” to be inscribed on the front of the presidential one dollar coin. The title of the Byrd/Brownback bill is: "A bill to amend title 31, United States Code, to require the inscription "In God We Trust" to appear on a face of the $1 coins honoring each of the Presidents of the United States."

Senator Brownback said, "Since the colonial beginnings of the United States, citizens of this nation have officially acknowledged their dependence on God. It is important that our national motto, ‘In God We Trust,’ is prominently displayed on all of our currency. We should not relegate our heritage to the side."

Senator Brownback earlier this week met with officials from the United States Treasury to discuss moving the national motto from the side of one dollar coins to the face. Presidential one dollar coins are the only U.S. coins currently being issued by the National Mint that have inscriptions along the edge.

Christian Coalition of America led the way earlier this year in assisting Congressman Virgil Goode, Republican from Virginia, in getting co-sponsors for his similar bill in the United States House of Representatives. Congressman Goode's bill is H. R. 2510 and he has 100 co-sponsors so far. A senior Republican in the House of Representatives, Congressman Dan Burton, Republican from Indiana, is also taking the lead in ensuring currency and coins have "In God We Trust" prominently on the face of the coins and on all currency.

This week, Senator Brownback also mentioned a "Wall Street Journal" column (November 30) by John Andrew Murray which pointed out actions by Treasury Secretary Chase during the Lincoln Administration which is relevant to Senator Brownback's and Senator Byrd's bill, S. 2417.

Excerpts from Mr. Murray's column:

"Fifty years ago, the phrase 'In God We Trust' first appeared on our nation's one-dollar bill. But long before the motto was signed into law by President Eisenhower, it was considered for U.S. coins during the divisive years of the Civil War.

On Nov. 13, 1861, in the first months of the war, Treasury Secretary Salmon P. Chase received the following letter from a Rev. M.R. Watkinson:

"Dear Sir, One fact touching our currency has hitherto been seriously overlooked. I mean the recognition of the Almighty God in some form on our coins. You are probably a Christian. What if our Republic were now shattered beyond reconstruction? Would not the antiquaries of succeeding centuries rightly reason from our past that we were a heathen nation?" The clergyman surmised correctly. Chase was indeed a Christian...."

"...Given the association of his name with Chase Manhattan, however, Salmon P. Chase is largely remembered for his role as secretary of the Treasury from 1861 to 1864. Seven days after reading the 1861 letter from the Pennsylvania pastor, Chase wrote the following to the director of the Mint in Philadelphia:

"Dear Sir, No nation can be strong except in the strength of God or safe except in His defense. The trust of our people in God should be declared on our national coins."

It was several years in the making, but on March 3, 1865, Congress passed a bill calling for "In God We Trust" to be inscribed on U.S. coins. It would be one of the last acts President Lincoln signed into law."

Senate Republicans Defeat Senate Democrats' Scheme to Increase Taxes (a whopping $81 BILLION) on Americans/Democrat Senate Leaders Forced Yesterday to Pass Republicans' Bill to Stop the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT)

Senate Republicans, even though they are in the minority, gained a huge victory yesterday for the American people, by stopping the Senate Democrats' plan to increase taxes on the American people by a huge 81 billion dollars. Instead, the Senate Democrats were forced to vote on the Republican legislation which would stop the onerous Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) from hitting millions of middle class American families. Unfortunately, the Democrats in the House of Representatives will try to increase taxes on other Americans to offset the elimination of the AMT.

The Republican bill passed overwhelmingly by a margin of 88-5. Senator Orrin G. Hatch, R-UT, said, "We are not going to roll over and play dead" with regards to the Democrats' huge tax increase bill. The AMT would have increased taxes for some 23 million middle-class taxpayers (in the unlikely event that the House will not approve the Senate-passed Republican tax cut bill), some with incomes as low as $50,000. In today's "The Washington Times," it was reported that the AMT is a 1969 provision designed to ensure that the "rich pay at least some income taxes." But it is not indexed for inflation, and thus would have hit some 23 million taxpayers this year.

The Republican Leader in the United States Senate, Mitch McConnell (KY), said that the huge vote for the Republican tax cut plan validated the principle at the core of the debate over the AMT: "Tax cuts for some should not be offset by tax increases for others." However, Democrat leaders in the House, including Nancy Pelosi (San Francisco) will attempt to increase taxes on other Americans to offset the AMT elimination for 23 million taxpayers.

ACTION item: Call your Congressmen at 202-225-3121 or you can go to http://www.cc.org/contactcongress.cfm and urge them to vote for the Alternative Minimum Tax Elimination bill passed by the Senate, and not to INCREASE taxes on other Americans.

"Bella" Lead Actor Eduardo Verastegui Speaks About Holding the Baby He Helped Save From Abortion -- Young Women Are Choosing to Keep their Babies After Seeing this Tremendous Movie -- Christian Coalition Supporters Urged to see the Award-winning Film "Bella" During its Final Weeks in Theaters

LifeNews.com reports today that "Millions of Americans have enjoyed the soft pro-life theme of the movie Bella, which has been one of Hollywood's success stories despite the limited number of theaters showing the film. Now, lead actor Eduardo Verastegui is sharing more details about the baby saved from an abortion as he prepared for his role in the film. Bella's producers had wanted to keep the story private for fear of making their movie appear to be a polemic political statement on abortion. In a statement released on Thursday, Verastegui, for the first time, publicly discusses what happened...."

Like many Americans, Eduardo Verastegui had no idea what happens in abortion chambers around the United States. He said: "I decided to go to an abortion center to see if I could learn more about what women think and feel when faced with a crisis pregnancy".

Life News.com reports, "Outside, he met a Hispanic couple considering an abortion and he was able to speak with them in their native Spanish for 45 minutes. He offered them hope, help, encouragement and his phone number. 'Several months later,' Eduardo continues, 'I received a phone call from the man I met with the pregnant lady in front of the abortion center. He said, '''Hello Eduardo - this is Javier, and I have great news. My boy was born yesterday! I want to thank you and ask your permission - I would like to name him, Eduardo,''' the man told him.

'I just put the phone down - I couldn't even talk,' Eduardo says. 'It's the most emotional thing I've ever done in my life. It changed my life. It was beautiful. I went to the hospital to meet them and see the baby. A few weeks later, I was holding little Eduardito in my hands. It was beautiful,' he added...."

Christian Coalition of America urges all of its supporters to find the theaters which are showing "Bella" in their area because Eduardo Verastegue's "Bella" has touched many other lives in the same way. A grassroots marketing campaign, formed by adoption advocates, church leaders, businesspeople and Latino groups, has helped the movie gross nearly $6.8 million in North America which is more than double the production costs.

If you are interested in making "Bella" even more of a success, here is what you can do:

Christian Coalition of America commends Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice for Not Caving into Radical Homosexual Lobby -- U.S. Ambassador to Romania, an Open Homosexual Resigns Because his Lover did not Receive Same Privileges as Married Spouses

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice should be commended for not caving in to the radical homosexual lobby regarding the State Department's policy of not providing homosexual couples with the same privileges as married couples. As a result the United States Ambassador to Romania, Michael Guest, quit in protest saying his homosexual lover should have the same privileges as married spouses.

The State Department has an estimated 350 homosexuals working under the leadership of Secretary of State Rice. The Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) which passed overwhelmingly by the United States Congress prohibits the taxpayers from having to pay for lifestyles which are morally reprehensible to most taxpayers.

Atheist's Case Against God Once Again Went Before Left-wing 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco on Tuesday -- the Court Most Overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court by far -- Michael Newdow is Attempting to Get "One Nation Under God" Removed from the Pledge of Allegiance in Public Schools.

Once again the phrase "One Nation Under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance is under attack by Michael Newdow, the atheist who is determined to wipe God from the public square. On Tuesday, the Becket Fund appealed to the radical 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco, a Sacramento, California court's 2005 decision to ban the Pledge in public schools in Newdow v. Carey because Newdow found the 2 words "under God" offensive. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, the most liberal in the United States, is the most overturned court in the nation by the Supreme Court, by far, and they of course are expected to rule in Newdow's favor. And the Supreme Court is expected to overturn the 9th Circuit's decision.

The Becket Fund's lawyer pre-empted the atheist's arguments by arguing that the phrase "under God" has always been used in American history as a way of protecting rights, not violating them. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, extremely hostile to religion, is expected to render their decision within a few months. The United States Congress must act to withdraw jurisdiction -- on matters such as "One Nation Under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance -- from these radical courts, far out of touch with the American people. Some 90% of the American people want "One Nation Under God" to stay in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Christian Coalition Activists Need to Encourage 110th Congress to Pass Both "Net Neutrality" and "Multicast/Equal Access" Legislation to Prevent Discrimination Against Religious Broadcasters -Democrat-controlled Congress Expected to Pass "Net Neutrality"

The lame-duck Republican Senate did not pass a telecommunications bill and thus a "Net Neutrality" provision was not passed in the 109th Congress. "Net Neutrality" is an issue extremely important to America's grassroots organizations and those Americans who want to ensure the cable and phone companies controlling access to the Internet will not discriminate against groups like Christian Coalition of America. Although AT&T recently made an agreement with the FCC that it would agree to "net neutrality" in order to merge with BellSouth Corp. in a $86 billion merger, the agreement only lasts 2 years. Therefore Congress must pass "net neutrality" legislation in order to make "net neutrality" permanent.

It is anticipated that the Democrat-controlled 110th Congress will agree with the position of the recent House Judiciary Committee Chairman, James Sensenbrenner (R-WI), and pass a "Net Neutrality" bill during the 110th Congress. If "Net Neutrality" legislation does not pass, consumers will have to pay an additional fee to have a website. The cable/telephone monopoly will be dividing the Internet into a "fast track" and "slow track." Our grassroots, many of whom cannot afford the additional fees, will have to be on the slow track, which will mean that many of our websites will be passed by because the general public will not have the patience to go on the "slow track".

"Multicast/Equal Access" (formerly called "Multicast/Must-carry") will go a long way to preventing discrimination against religious broadcasters. Without a "Multicast/Equal Access" law, the cable and satellite companies would probably not add new Christian channels and the influence of current Christian channels will be diluted.

Action Item: Please continue to ask your Members of Congress to support “Multicast/Equal Access” and religious broadcasters. Call your Congressman and 2 Senators at 202-225-3121 or you can go to http://www.cc.org/contactcongress.cfm and email them and let them know we need a “Multicast/Equal Access” and "Net Neutrality" legislation to pass in the 110th Congress.

Please sign our petition and join the Judicial Task Force at http://www.cc.org/taskforce.cfm.

Encourage your family, friends and church friends to also sign the petition at our website and to join the Christian Coalition’s Judicial Task Force, which is dedicated to ending the obstruction of the President's judicial nominees and ensuring that they ALL receive a fair "up or down" vote by the full Senate.

There are a number of President Bush's Circuit Court of Appeals' nominees who have not yet received a Senate floor vote. The challenge to confirm President Bush's nominees in a Democrat-controlled Senate will be very difficult and we need your help in doing just that. You will become part of a team of individuals who are committed to being ready on a moment’s notice to take action when obstruction occurs.
