WASHINGTON- On Tuesday, Rep. Chip Roy (TX-21) issued the following statement in honor of Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day 2021:
Just before 8 a.m. on that Sunday morning, hundreds of Japanese fighter planes descended on Pearl Harbor, destroying, and damaging nearly 20 American naval vessels, including eight battleships, and over 300 airplanes.
More importantly, over 2,400 American sailors, soldiers and civilians were killed and about 1,000 were wounded in that cowardly surprise attack.
That fateful morning, the tyrannical Japanese empire awakened a sleeping giant that would not rest again until our enemies were defeated, and our liberties secured.
In the years following, the young men of America’s greatest generation would storm the beaches of Normandy and Iwo Jima, risking everything they had for the cause of freedom and love of country.
Today, we the living, remember who gave their last full measure of devotion to a cause greater than themselves, and those still with us who stand as living monuments to sacrifice and selfless service.
There is only one way that we of following generations, can properly thank them for their sacrifice as Americans. As Fredericksburg, Texas native, Admiral Chester Nimitz put it:
“They fought together as brothers in arms; they died together and now they sleep side by side. To them we have a solemn obligation – the obligation to ensure that their sacrifice will help to make this a better and safer world in which to live.”
And that is to fight to live free.
God bless them, and God bless a free American people.
