Bill makes it a crime to transport a minor across state lines to obtain an abortion without satisfying parental involvement law
WASHINGTON, February 2, 2023 — United States Representative Mike Johnson (LA-04) today introduced legislation to protect minors and their unborn children by making it illegal to transport a minor across state lines to obtain an abortion without satisfying parental involvement law.
“It is a matter of safety and common sense to ensure parents of minors have the right to know if their child is crossing state lines to receive an abortion,” Johnson said. “We should never allow a state law to be circumvented to benefit those seeking to take advantage of a minor.”
Background on the Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act:
The legislation makes it a crime to knowingly transport a minor across state lines to obtain an abortion without first satisfying parental involvement laws in the minor’s state of residence. Physicians must also comply with parental notification laws. This legislation previously passed the United States House of Representatives in 2005.
