Stefanik Requests Protection for Hyde Amendment in President Biden’s Budget

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Elise Stefanik has sent a letter, led by Congressman Jim Banks (IN-03), to President Biden requesting support for the Hyde Amendment.

The Hyde Amendment bars the use of federal funds to pay for abortion except to save the life of the woman, or if the pregnancy arises from incest or rape. It has been a bipartisan provision in every President’s budget for over 40 years.

In part, the letter reads: “Your first budget as President is an affront to the majority of Americans who do not want their tax dollars to fund abortion. Recent polling found that nearly 60 percent of Americans oppose using tax dollars to pay for a woman’s abortion. The Hyde Amendment simply reflects the consensus that abortion, a brutal procedure that ends the lives of unborn children, is not something that the United States taxpayer should be forced to fund.”

“The Hyde Amendment is a critical, life-saving protection that goes beyond politics to preserve and protect human life,” said Congresswoman Stefanik. “Every President, since President Carter, has signed the Hyde Amendment into law. President Biden’s budget removes critical pro-life provisions despite his prior support. I am calling on the President to reinstate the Hyde Amendment in order to protect the most innocent among us – the unborn.”
